A couple of years ago I had a conversation with some wedding photographer friends where they were sharing their desires to photograph weddings abroad, mostly in hot mediterranean countries. They thought that I was mad that my top bucket list venue was Crear on the west coast of Scotland, although after seeing a wedding by the amazing Neil Thomas Douglas I was obsessed. Within weeks of that conversation Amy called me and wondered if I’d be willing to travel up with them and their family, almost all from the midlands . . . . “YES PLEASE!”. It really didn’t disappoint.
It’s about a 35 minute drive from the nearest town on a single track road before you reach the coast. It’s all seals, deers and breathtaking scenery that is like nowhere else in the UK. The venue is often used as a classical music recording studio as it’s so remote, but for weddings it’s nearly perfect, lots of communal areas and many rooms that can accommodate family and closest friends. In the evening during the summer the sun sets over the Isle of Jura across the water and brings the most amazing light in through the glass wall of the main room. The venue also has it’s own beach, which is has clean white sand and a derelict chapel that mades for some amazing portrait spots.
